What to Consider When Buying Solar Panels

When you decide to make the investment into clean energy and install a solar PV system in your home, there are a few things you need to keep in mind. It’s easy to become bewildered by the solar market that has become saturated with choice. While choice is a great thing, it’s important to remember that you need to find the products that suit your home, your energy use and your specific situation.

We’ve broken down the complex process of choosing between the many solar product options on the market into a 3 step process that allows you to make a decision that’s right for your specific needs. This process involves answering just 3 simple questions:

1. Do you have a large roof or a small roof?

Limited roof space means that you need to maximise the efficiency and output of your panels in order to provide enough energy to power your home. Therefore homes with a small roof or limited space to install panels, should consider buying Mono Panels . Compared to the other common type, Poly Panels, the ‘Mono’ technology option provides a higher produce more power for the same size panel.

Those with large roofs or plenty of space to install panels could consider using multiple ‘Poly’ panels instead as a more cost effective means of achieving the same energy output.

2. Do you have high or low energy usage?

Understanding the usage requirements for your home is essential to determining the size of the solar system that you need. To do this, we recommend looking back over your electricity bills and use over the last 5-10 years to gauge an accurate representation of your annual requirements. From here we can determine whether you will need a large system with higher kilowatt-hour (kWh) production, or a smaller system that might be more cost effective.

3. Is your roof shaded?

Shading is an important variable when choosing the right system for you. Common causes of shade are trees, buildings and objects that block the sun getting to your roof. Clearly the more shade on your roof, the less sun you will have access to in order to convert to usable electricity.

However, if you have issues with shade – do not despair! There are options and accessories available to you so that you can maximise the energy from the sun that you do receive.

The key issue with shading is not simply a lack of sun. Partial shading can be just as detrimental to your solar panels as complete shading. With most common panel technology, when part of the circuit gets disrupted by shade, the entire panel can stop working.

Half cell panels, optimisers and micro-inverters are all good means of overcoming this issue. These boost the performance of your system and allow part of the circuit to continue functioning while the rest is in shade. For more information on these technologies, speak with one of our specialists about shading options.

What to Consider When Buying Inverters

Inverters are one of the most important elements of any solar PV system, yet they are often overlooked and misunderstood by consumers. Inverters convert the electricity from your panels into usable electricity needed to power your home and appliances. The better your inverter, the more efficient this conversion process will be and thus the more energy you will reap from your solar power system.

There are several different factors to consider when buying an inverter:

Reputation

The reputation of the inverter’s manufacturer is critical as it will reflect on the quality of the product and reliability of its performance. We always recommend manufacturers with outstanding reputations as it will safeguard your investment against poor craftsmanship and materials, unreliable warranties and short life spans.

Warranty

Increased 10-year warranties are a valuable asset when selecting an inverter. You want your inverter to continue functioning at a high performance level for the duration of its lifespan. Don’t just put your faith in the quality of a product, insure your solar system by acquiring the best possible warranty for your inverter.

Remote Monitoring

The best inverters on the market will include remote monitoring apps. This allows you to track the efficiency of your system and review analytics to determine whether you can optimise your output through changing its configuration.

Noise

Choosing an inverter that is quiet is important for those with small homes, or with their system close to living or sleeping areas. Goodwe and SMA inverters are relatively quiet. Make sure you ask about the noise of the inverter before buying.
