9.9kW Solar System | Solar Panel Cost & Buying Guide

Note: A 10 kilowatt solar system is generally a 9.9 kilowatt solar system (kW) that has been rounded up for simplicity. For the purposes of this article we will use 10kW and 9.9kW interchangeably.A solar energy system powered by 10kW solar panels are the perfect system size for residential homes with large roof space and high solar energy needs. Those who have already installed solar and are looking to get more out of their grid connection might be considering upgrading to 10kW.

10kW solar PV systems generate enough renewable energy to power homes that require a very large amount of electricity. 10 kW solar panels are also appropriate for commercial properties with relatively low energy consumption.

Homes and businesses that are deciding whether 9.9kW solar panels are right for them should consider:

  • Solar system cost
  • Your solar energy needs
  • Which solar company
  • Cost of solar
  • Roof space requirements
  • Other factors
    • Solar rebates & subsidies
    • Rate of feed-in tariff (including minimum feed-in tariff & time varying tariff)
    • Solar inverters
    • Solar battery storage

In this article we will cover all of these essential elements to help you make an informed final decision. Choosing the right solar power system involves understanding your needs and the options on the market. Size & Specs of a 9.9kw Solar System

The size and specifications of your solar system will depend on the type of solar panels that you use. Solar panels are in most cases 1.6m x 1m in size. Most panels installed these days are between 275 watts and 350 watts.

How much roof space do you need for a 10kW system?

To generate 10 kilowatts of solar energy using 60-cell panels of 275 watts would require 36 solar panels. This would therefore require 57.6m2 in roof space and generate 9,900 watts (making it a 9.9kW system).

For systems with 60-cell panels of 300 watts you would need 33 panels. This requires 52.8m2 of roof space and generates 9,900 watts of solar energy (also making this a 9.9kW system).

Using 72-cell panels of 350 watts would require 28 solar panels. This would need 44.8m2 of roof space and generate 9,800 watts (making this a 9.8kW system).

From these examples you can see that there are a lot of answers to the question of how much roof space you will need for a 10kW solar system. Broadly speaking a 10kW system will need between 28 and 36 solar panels. This will require between 44m2 and 58m2.

Who is the 9.9kW System Right For?

Generating up to 10kW of solar electricity isn’t necessary for everyone. Small houses or houses with low energy usage should definitely be looking at smaller system sizes. However, for large homes with high energy usage and big appliances this may be the perfect investment for you.

If your electricity bill is in the realm of $800, then 10 kilowatts of solar power could end up saving you a fortune. Home additions like reverse cycle air conditioning, pools, home automation and pool pumps can all drive your electricity bill sky high.

Small businesses are another prime contender for 10kW solar systems. Consistently high energy usage throughout the day means that you could be making maximum savings by offsetting those costs through solar energy.

9.9kW Solar PV System Value For Money

To get the most value for money from your solar system you will want to be self-consuming most of the power that you generate. Sending excess electricity back into the grid can reduce your energy bill and save you money. However, the rate for feed-in tariffs is less than what you pay for electricity from the grid. This means that you will get a greater return from your system if you are consuming the majority of the power that you generate.

While you will start saving money from the moment you have your 10kW solar system installed, the true value for your money will come after the payback period. This is the time it takes for your system to pay for itself through the savings that it generates in your energy bill. The average payback period for 10 kilowatt systems is around 4 years.

The amount of time it takes for your system to complete this period will depend on where you live as that will dictate the amount of sun you receive and the amount you paid for upfront costs.

You can expect your system to efficiently work for 25-30 years. This means that you can hope for 20-25 years of your system providing you with direct profit through your greatly reduced energy bills.

Increase the value of your investment

Solar Rebates

Government subsidies and state rebate initiatives can drastically lower the upfront cost of your 10kW solar system. Not only does this make solar energy more affordable, but it reduces the payback period of your device. This means that your system can become profitable sooner, giving you a greater return on investment and improving the overall value of your system.

Feed-in Tariffs

The rate of feed-in tariffs that you receive will depend on which state you’re in, which energy provider you choose and which plan you’re on. The amount you can save from the electricity you send to the grid will also depend on whether you choose a time-varying tariff or a fixed rate. For information on the rates of feed in tariffs across the different states and the minimum tariffs available, read our article on feed-in tariffs .

Solar Inverters

The quality of your inverter will determine the level of efficiency of your solar system as a whole. Inverters determine the efficiency in converting the solar power into usable electricity. One of the best ways to increase the value of your system and improve your ROI is to purchase a top end inverter from a reliable manufacturer.

Solar Batteries

Any home or business that is looking at investing in a 10kw solar system should be thinking about a solar battery storage device too. Solar storage capacity can ensure that your investment is safeguarded and that no energy is lost. Rather than relying on lower rates of feed-in tariffs, batteries allow you to store your electricity. This means that you can use more of your electricity for self-consumption, which has the highest value and return on investment.
