Even though solar energy is the most abundant form of energy on Earth, the level of solar technology that we are currently at cannot capture most of the sunlight that beams towards Earth. There are also a variety of factors that go into how efficient a solar panel can be. Factors that Affect Your Solar Panel’s Efficiency?

1. Your Solar Panel’s Age

There have been many innovations in the solar world in the past 5 years that have made older models obsolete. Things such as half-cut solar cells, multi-busbar technology, bifacial and shingled technology, have all bolstered the total performance that solar panels can now run at.

The issue is, as these innovations develop, so too will the performance of the solar panels. The older your panel is, the more likely that they are not as efficient when they were first installed, and it is absolutely true that they are not as efficient as newer models. 2. The Materials Your Solar Cells are Made of

Solar cell efficiency degrades the longer you use them, and based on the material they’re made of, they can break or become less efficient. This leads to better long-term solar cell efficiency as cells made of silicon and copper do not deteriorate as rapidly as silicon-only solar cells.

3. Your Average Sun Exposure

There are many reasons why your roof may get more or less sunlight than other areas, but whatever the reason may be – a change in sun exposure will equal a change in your solar panel’s energy production. 4. Temperature Coefficient

Your solar panel’s temperature coefficient also plays a heavy role in your solar panel’s efficiency. On hotter days (when there is more sunlight) your solar panel’s performance actually dwindles. This is because like most technology, the hotter it gets, the less effective the systems are because of heat degradation. Likewise, the cooler the day is (even if there is less sunlight) the more optimal your solar panel’s performance will be because of lesser heat degradation.

Do Solar Panels Become Less Efficient Over Time?

The quick answer is yes – solar panels do become less efficient over time. Just like any other piece of technology, it will degrade over time.

However, there are things that can protect you from worsening efficiency such as performance warranties. A performance warranty is a guarantee by the solar manufacturer that your solar panels will be at a minimum a certain percent efficient within 25 years of usage. Brands such as Sunpower, and their MAXEON 5 series have a performance warranty of 92%. This means that after 25 years of usage, your panel should still be at least 92% efficient.

What is a performance warranty?

A solar panel has two warranties. The first one is the equipment guarantee warranty, which will protect your panels between 10-25 years. A performance warranty guarantees 80% to 92% production for your solar panels at 25 years.

This means that if your solar panels perform less than 80% – you can return your panels, and they will give you panels that will achieve said efficiency.

Obviously, performance warranties differentiate between solar companies, Jinko Solar has a 25-year performance warranty at 85%, so make sure to account for that when you are buying solar modules.

How do I access REBATES for solar on the Mid North Coast?

Rebates for solar energy products under 100kW in size in NSW can be divided into two distinct categories: feed-in tariffs and small-scale technology certificates.

Feed-in Tariffs

Feed-in tariffs (FiTs) are a great way of paying off the price of your solar power system using the very same energy that it generates. Due to the long daylight hours and quality sunshine on the Mid North Coast, most homes won’t use all of the energy produced by their panels. As such, residents can get reimbursed by their energy provider for the excess electricity that they feed back into the grid.

This program offers Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) based on the amount of solar energy that will be produced by your system. The program is divided into two categories: Large-scale generation certificates (LGCs) and Small-scale technology certificates (STCs).

LGCs are awarded for solar energy systems over 100kW in size and are granted based on the system’s actual energy output each year. STCs are for systems under 100kW in size and are awarded as an upfront discount to the cost of your system based on the projected energy output of the system.

The Solar Credits program is set to end in 2030 and has been designed to gradually decrease in value each year until it ends. The price of RECs changes each year and is also subject to market fluctuation. As such, the value of STCs will depend on a number of factors.

Look for panels that meet the IEC 61215, a reliability standard established by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). IEC 61215 uses an accelerated outdoor stress test for panels to ensure their durability.

While some homeowners may choose to invest in the highest quality, most efficient “premium” panels, remember that those will come with a higher price tag. Which inverter should I choose?

It’s the job of the inverter in your solar energy system to convert the solar energy into something you can use. Solar panels take solar energy and make it into direct current (DC) power. The inverter’s job is to convert that DC power into the alternating current (AC) electricity that can be used in your home.

There are two types of inverters: string inverters and module-level power electronics(MLPEs). Both micro inverters and power optimisers are both MLPEs.

Both String inverters and Micro inverters convert Direct Current (DC) electricity into Alternating Current (AC) electricity that can be used to power your home and appliances. However, while a string inverter will carry out this conversion in a central location on the ground, micro inverters will do so on the back of each solar panel on the roof.

Rather than having a single inverter for a whole circuit (or ‘string’ — hence the name), micro inverters are individually attached to each panel. The advantage of this is that they can monitor per panel and if one inverter malfunctions it won’t affect the rest of your solar system as it would with a string inverter.

Types of Solar Inverters

LGCs are awarded for solar energy systems over 100kW in size and are granted based on the system’s actual energy output each year. STCs are for systems under 100kW in size and are awarded as an upfront discount to the cost of your system based on the projected energy output of the system.

The Solar Credits program is set to end in 2030 and has been designed to gradually decrease in value each year until it ends. The price of RECs changes each year and is also subject to market fluctuation. As such, the value of STCs will depend on a number of factors. The savings in your energy bills are the main way that your solar system generates a ROI. The better matched your system is to your energy consumption habits, the better these energy bill savings will be. The final factor to consider in your ROI calculations is the rate of feed-in tariffs that you receive from your energy provider and the amount of excess electricity that your system generates (see solar rebates above for FiT explanation).
